Hasan Kwame Jeffries, Ph.D., attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, the nation’s leading institution for educating African-American men. While matriculating at Morehouse, he was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society and initiated into the Pi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. After graduating summa cum laude from Morehouse with a B.A. in history in 1994, Jeffries enrolled at Duke University, where he earned a M.A. in American history in 1997, and a Ph.D. in American history with a specialization in African American history in 2002. David O’Brien’s scholarship and teaching focus on the literacy practices of adolescents. He has studied how adolescents use literacy to learn content across the disciplines and also how their teachers learn to integrate literacy practices into various disciplines in middle and high school instruction. His research is collaborative, conducted within a community of practice with the intent of improving adolescents’ literacy skills and practices concurrently with improving their teachers’ abilities to meet the needs of a range of learners.
